About this course:

The Cycle Against Suicide Community Mental Health Peer-Support Training  (Community Buddy) trains individuals within communities to provide essential mental health support within their own club/association/network.  By equipping participants with step-by-step tools and strategies, the training enables individuals to offer initial support to those who may be struggling or navigating stressful or difficult circumstances.

Participants learn how to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for structured conversations using active listening techniques where individuals can openly discuss their challenges and work together with the trained peer-mentor to develop effective ways of coping and overcoming obstacles.

This course not only fosters mental health awareness but also actively contributes to suicide prevention efforts by empowering individuals to provide meaningful support within their communities, clubs, or associations.

Testimonial– from a recipient of a Workplace Peer-supporter:
For three years, I struggled with my mental health. Earlier this year, I got to my lowest point, I didn’t know who I was anymore. I couldn’t talk to friends or family. I got so used to being unhappy, it felt normal. So, I decided to speak to Liz, (our) Workplace Buddy. Liz just listened and she told me what I already knew I had to do. I will never forget Liz’s support during, what was probably, the worst time of my life. Liz, (our) Workplace Buddy is a Lady that Listens! Anonymous

Testimonial – from a Community Peer-Supporter offering support in his local club:
I’ve being meaning to email you for awhile to thank you. The training I did with you, I can safely say saved a life. The role play we did came into play but this time in real life. The course gave me the tools and the courage to ask the questions that needed to be asked and to get the help to the person in need. I’ve just qualified as a mental health peer support worker and your training was by far the best delivered course I’ve attended. Anonymous

Participants on the course will learn:

  • How stress and mental health affect people
  • The techniques of Active Listening
  • How to spot signs of distress in others
  • How to help others build resilience with positive coping methods
  • How to recognize when professional help is needed and how to encourage help seeking behaviour.

Who can do this course?

Our aim is to have a volunteer Peer-Supporter role on the board of every club or association who is available, for a set period of time, to offer peer-support to their peers in their club and association.

To achieve this, we encourage any volunteers of local community clubs or associations to join, including sports clubs, book clubs, arts clubs, Tidy Towns, Men’s Sheds, Women’s Sheds, Parents’ Associations, Residents’ Associations, and any group dedicated to engaging in their community’s health and wellbeing.

*Free of charge: this training is funded by Cycle Against Suicide.
