Suicide is complex and leaves lasting harmful effects on individuals, families and communities. Ireland ranked 61st  in the world for suicide at 9.6 per 100,000 people in 2021 based on data released by the European Commission.  The Health at a Glance Report, also published by the European Commission, stated that Ireland has one of the highest rates of mental health illness in Europe, ranking 3rd  out of 36 countries last year. Evidence indicates that one of the most common risk factors for suicide is a diagnosis of a mental health
problem or illness.

Mental health related stigma is incredibly harmful and can result in a range of negative outcomes including social isolation, loss of connectedness and reduced help seeking behaviour.

Cycle Against Suicide continues its awareness campaign, leveraging, reframing and reworking our anti-stigma message ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’. This allows for greater expression and recognition of emotions as well as help seeking behaviour. We continue to highlight that there is strength in vulnerability. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength. It is OK not to feel OK and it’s absolutely OK to reach out and ask for help.

There are strategies available to support our wellbeing and mental health. February 2022 research from the healthcare outcomes research centre and the department of health psychology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) found that exercise is the most cost-effective method in the treatment of depression. Australia’s Black Dog Institute also found that 16 weeks of regular exercise is equally as effective as antidepressant medication in the treatment of mild to moderate depression.

Over many years, our cycles have resonated with hundreds of people to help support and enhance their mental health. In our latest challenge we invite you to join with us from May 19th – May 26th and complete the Cycle the N2 in 2022 – Portugal, end to end in support of your mental health and wellbeing.

Join us on this stimulating and energising 750km cycle in the most beautiful of surroundings. With average temperatures so much more manageable for cycling than during the hot summer months, this is an event that’s not to be missed! We will travel from one end of Portugal to the other while enjoying a myriad of lush landscapes and rolling vineyards. Experience the country’s vibrant culture and stunning cuisine.

While a tough cycle, the event is designed to be inclusive and supportive with an emphasis on positive mental health and wellbeing. There is no true health without mental health. Take a well-earned break from the rigours of everyday life and enhance your mental health while also supporting the work of Cycle Against Suicide.
