Every single year, suicide claims more lives unnecessarily. Viciously and remorselessly, mental illness pushes people into vulnerability. Many of us have experienced first-hand the consequences, watching a friend or family member as they made the dark descent, confused as to what we can do.
By not raising awareness of the realities of mental illness, we are creating untenable situations for those who then need to seek help. We understand this reality intuitively, and there are many people who would like to do something but are unsure what.
The first step is simple, if not easy – AWARENESS. In the midst of such suffering, silence is read as indifference. Cycle Against Suicide is all about communicating to others that we hear them, that they are not alone, and that “It’s OK not to feel OK, and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help.”
Cycle Against Suicide’s main campaign for raising awareness into communities is our Annual Cycle.

Our 2021 event will take place from Saturday April 24th to Sunday May 2nd.

We ask that people from across Ireland join with us for any part of this event, and together, we will keep cycling toward a brighter future, one that affirms life, encourages openness, and cherishes the gumption to seek out support.
Our campaign will cycle through the following locations: Galway, Tuam, Castlebar, Kiltimagh, Sligo Town, Bundoran, Donegal Town, Irvinestown, Enniskillen, Clones, Cavan Town, Granard,-Longford, Roscommon Town, Athlone Town, Mullingar Town, Enfield, and Swords Castle,
Year after year, the suffering continues. We shed tears burying our loved ones, but nothing changes. We say no more – no more silence, no more inaction, no more complacency. It’s time for all people of conscience to recognise the pain that mental illness has wrought and do something about it.
By joining with us and lending your supporting to this campaign, you can make a difference

Using pedal power to promote a conversation about mental health, this annual event is a movement of cyclists of all abilities and backgrounds. Family, friends, work colleagues and total strangers come together to publicly raise awareness throughout towns and communities across Ireland that mental illness is accepted like any other illness and help is real.  It is vital that we work together to change the way mental illness is viewed. Let us learn to see the person and not the illness.  We encourage all to get involved. Help us empower those who are suffering by promoting our message: ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’.

We ask that you lend your support during this event to help promote change within your community by joining with us in any capacity during our main cycle.

Help us fundraise: This year we are hoping that those cycling with us will help us fundraise for our Schools’ Programme. According to UNICEF’s latest report card on child well-being, Ireland has the fourth highest teen suicide rate in the EU region. The report further shows that in younger teens, aged 11-15, more than 22% report having experienced two or more psychological symptoms more than once a week.

Cycle Against Suicide is working with secondary schools across the island of Ireland, North and South, introducing an evidence-based Schools’ Programme.  This contact education programme trains students to be mental health champions. It educates students on the mental health continuum, offers hope and builds resilience in students. The course is delivered at post-primary level across the island of Ireland.  All funds raised from our main cycle are invested in the delivery of this programme.
